Igniting Imaginations Presentation - Grade 4
The year is 1776 and someone will come to our classroom with everything we need to be soldiers. We push the desks back to have an open space to work in and the students wear tricorn hats and pretend to be soldiers around the campfire. After we march a bit she passes around hardtack and jerky (just for show!) and then the students lie down to rest while she reads a diary entry from a Revolutionary War soldier. Then she organizes the kids and they act out parts of the diary (this involves them falling down dead at different times - they love this part!). Then we drag ourselves back to camp and tear cloth bandages and the kids get to come up to the medical tent and choose some poultices. They bandage their wounds and we talk about what medical care is like at that time. The soldiers write letters to their families, and then play a dice game with stones and pewter dice to pass the time in camp.
