Improvisation, or improv, is a form of live theatre in which the plot, characters and dialogue of a game, scene or story are made up in the moment. Actors often use suggestions from the audience to inspire spontaneous, in-the-moment theater and it requires no scripts, costumes or props. Sometimes people worry they re not funny enough for improv, not to worry as the humor in improv is derived through the mechanics of the scene, not from people telling jokes! This play-based activity uses theater games and exercises to help students step outside of themselves, increase emotional intelligence, and develop confidence and on-stage skills. But mainly, it s just fun.

The principles of improv teach us how to exercise spontaneity and focus in a way that has been used by comedians, scientists, playwrights, athletes, and corporate executives to develop listening, focus, empathy, agreement, articulation, risk taking, viewing mistakes as gifts, connection and teamwork. These skills aid in creative thinking, problem solving, communicating, and provide lots of laughs!

Taking notice of life off-stage will serve students in presenting it honestly on-stage. Encouraging students creativity, innate curiosity and ability to make connections with others will serve aspiring performers as much as any other aspiring member of the human race in a safe, collaborative environment.

The session will conclude with an Improv Showcase performance the evening of December 10th

REFUNDS: Because American Academy teachers run our extracurricular activities based on the number of sign-ups prior to the activity, all activity fees are non-refundable unless the teacher needs to cancel the activity due to low enrollment.

LATE ENROLLMENT OR MISSED ATTENDANCE: Timely enrollment and regular attendance for each activity is the responsibility of the parent and the student. The activity fee does not reflect the number of days your student attends the activity; rather, the activity fee is a flat fee budgeted to cover the costs to the school and the teacher for each activity that runs, and is the same for each student enrolled in that activity, regardless of the number of days the student attends. For this reason, American Academy does not prorate activity fees for late enrollments or give refunds to students not in attendance each day of the activity.
