Info

Middle school students from all campuses - Incoming 6th graders through outgoing 8th graders are invited to join us for our summer production of Mean Girls, Jr.!

This "fetch" musical from book writer Tina Fey (30 Rock), is packed with keen wit, an undeniably catchy score, and a sincere message for everyone.

Cady Heron may have grown up on an African savanna, but nothing prepared her for the wild and vicious ways of her strange new home: suburban Illinois. How will this naïve newbie rise to the top of the popularity pecking order? By taking on The Plastics, a trio of lionized frenemies led by the charming but ruthless Regina George. Cady and her friends devise a "Revenge Party" to end Regina’s reign with Cady going undercover as an aspiring Plastic. When the lines between the real Cady and her Plastic self get blurred, she must find her way back to herself and her true friends.

NOTE:  We will be performing the condensed and edited version for middle school students (recommended for audiences ages 10+), however, there are some themes of disparaging self and body image, the inclusion of a “burn book” (book of disparaging observations and comments about others), and the impact on interpersonal relationships of extreme efforts to try to “fit in”.  These themes can sometimes be triggers for middle school students.

Before registering your student, please preview the content and be certain that your family is comfortable with your student’s participation and willing to have any potential conversations as a family, that may result. Please also be assured that American Academy Performing Arts will handle all content with scrutiny and meaningful consideration of impact on any student’s well-being, and in a manner that represents our American Academy character and values.  Additionally, the conflict of the story resolves in a manner that depicts the value of character and redemption, despite making unfortunate choices along the way.  These are valuable lessons for students in middle school.

If you have questions about how we might handle some of the specific occurrences in the script, please feel free to reach out for clarification, but also be aware that student’s will receive a script, regardless, with the content as indicated in this preview version:
