GRADES 5-8:

In this 8 week course, students will learn the actors great challenge of standing on the stage and presenting a monologue. In theatre, a monologue is presented by a single character, most often to express their thoughts aloud, though sometimes also to directly address another character or the audience. Students will choose an appropriate dramatic or comedic monologue and through the course of the class, will utilize character development, emotional access, and comedic timing to deliver the monologue.

Students in grades 6-8 will be encouraged to present their monologues at the Colorado Junior Thespian Conference in early December.

This course is offered as part of the American Academy Performing Arts. You do NOT need to enroll in the American Academy Performing Arts (AAPA) to enroll in this class. The AAPA is for students in grades who are interested in enrolling in a track for performing arts in Theater, Instrumental, Vocal, Triple Threat or General Performance. An additional registration fee of $50 is required to enroll in the AAPA. Advantages to enrolling include a discount on extracurricular participation fees for Performing Arts courses, and students who complete all courses in their track will receive a certificate and recognition upon graduation from American Academy. For more details on courses required for certification, please visit the AAPA on the school website.

REFUNDS: Because American Academy teachers run our extracurricular activities based on the number of sign-ups prior to the activity, all activity fees are non-refundable unless the teacher needs to cancel the activity due to low enrollment. For this course, a total of at least 10 students must enroll in order for the activity to run.

LATE ENROLLMENT OR MISSED ATTENDANCE: Timely enrollment and regular attendance for each activity is the responsibility of the parent and the student. The activity fee does not reflect the number of days your student attends the activity; rather, the activity fee is a flat fee budgeted to cover the costs to the school and the teacher for each activity that runs, and is the same for each student enrolled in that activity, regardless of the number of days the student attends. For this reason, American Academy does not prorate activity fees for late enrollments or give refunds to students not in attendance each day of the activity.
