GRADES 5-8

In addition to being hilarious, ridiculous and exceedingly fun, the principles of improv apply to everyday life as much as to on stage performance. Improv teaches confidence, listening, focus, empathy, agreement, articulation, risk taking, viewing mistakes as gifts, connection, and ensemble support. Exercises will enhance student s stage performance while driving home these life-long principles, for example, they ll be asked to become more present in their environments, taking notice of actions that are often overlooked - what does it feel like to set a table, open a door, put on a jacket. Taking notice of life off-stage will serve them in presenting it honestly on-stage. Encouraging students creativity, innate curiosity and ability to make connections with others will serve aspiring performers as much as any other aspiring member of the human race in a fun, safe, collaborative environment.

This course is offered as part of the American Academy Performing Arts. You do NOT need to enroll in the American Academy Performing Arts (AAPA) to enroll in this class. The AAPA is for students in grades who are interested in enrolling in a track for performing arts in Theater, Instrumental, Vocal, Triple Threat or General Performance. An additional registration fee of $50 is required to enroll in the AAPA. Advantages to enrolling include a discount on extracurricular participation fees for Performing Arts courses, and students who complete all courses in their track will receive a certificate and recognition upon graduation from American Academy. For more details on courses required for certification, please visit the AAPA on the school website.

REFUNDS: Because American Academy teachers run our extracurricular activities based on the number of sign-ups prior to the activity, all activity fees are non-refundable unless the teacher needs to cancel the activity due to low enrollment.

LATE ENROLLMENT OR MISSED ATTENDANCE: Timely enrollment and regular attendance for each activity is the responsibility of the parent and the student. The activity fee does not reflect the number of days your student attends the activity; rather, the activity fee is a flat fee budgeted to cover the costs to the school and the teacher for each activity that runs, and is the same for each student enrolled in that activity, regardless of the number of days the student attends. For this reason, American Academy does not prorate activity fees for late enrollments or give refunds to students not in attendance each day of the activity.
